In this case we are not referring to the fabric, but to the silhouette of the garment. The pattern is a paper template, made to the actual size of the garment that is then used to cut out and stitch the actual garment. I like to compare pattern making to an architect who creates the plans for a house. A lot of math and understanding of the curves of the body is involved in pattern making.
